Some facts on Indonesia:

  • Population is over 238 million people, over half live on the island of Java
  • Jakarta is the capital with a population of 20 million people
  • Median age is 26
  • Over 17,500 islands in the archipelago of Indonesia
  • Only 6,000 islands are inhabited
  • It has the worlds longest coastline at 54,370 kilometres
  • Marco Polo was the first European to arrive, in 1292, followed by the Portugese in 1509, and the Dutch at the end of the 16th The republic of Indonesia was declared in 1945
  • A succession of dictatorships led by military leaders ended in 1998 and the country is now ruled by a democratically elected Government
  • There are only two seasons – wet and Dry – July to September is the dry season
  • Flag is two panels, red over white, boats must fly a courtesy flag & it should not be smaller, or flown lower than our national flag
  • Currency is the rupiah -10,000 rupiah is approximately $10 Australian
  • Indonesia has the highest population of Muslims in the world
  • Muslims are forbidden alcohol and pork
  • You should always use your right hand to eat, give or receive when in Muslim company

  • With 200-300 volcanoes it has the worlds greatest active concentration
  • Krakatau, in the Sundra Straight, off Java’s West Coast, is the most famous volcanoe, it killed over 36,000 people, with Tsunamis up to 40metres high in 1883, It continues to grow at a phenominal 20 inches a month…
  • Commercial logging of the extensive tropical rainforests causes regional and international controversy
  • After Brazil, Indonesia has the highest annual deforestation rate in the world
  • Komodo Island has the worlds largest lizard -the 3m long, 150 kilo, monitor lizard
