Living in Christchurch: A Journey from Boat Life

The journey from living aboard to living back on land began for Jenny and I almost 7 months ago. We have been ashore and now residence of Christchurch, in the South Island of New Zealand since we sold Southern Star, and packed up our modest possessions into a covered 4×8 trailer, and headed south.

The impetus to live in Chrischurch, came from me several years ago. We were in Chrischurch to see Jenny’s 93 year old mom, one bright winter day. We were downtown, walking along the Avon River. The air was crisp, but the sun was bright and warm. The foliage along the banks sparkled in the suns glow. We stopped a the Curators House restaurant for a coffee.

Sitting in the sun baked courtyard, sipping my cappuccino, I observed “I could live here”.

After Jenny picked herself off of the floor, She asked me if I was okay. I replied that I was simply loving the warm feeling, and the texture of the light, and the river flowing gently on this fine mid winter day.

And so, we then began to look seriously at what relocating from the North Island to the South Island would look like for us, once we sold Southern Star, and were ready to become land dwellers.
